Regards to Balthus
Lenore Myers' chapbook of poems, Regards to Balthus (Seven Kitchens Press, 2023), offers restrained, sly observations of the human dynamics at play in an artistic family, before exploring in the same manner the complex emotional landscape of the controversial paintings of Balthus. The brief collection of formally varied, compressed, and highly visual poems closes with an immersive, almost meditative, long poem-essay on the extended act of artistic and personal creation and destruction embodied by Jay DeFeo's painting-sculpture, "The Rose." The poems illuminate relations of power, desire, and ambivalence in their sharp-eyed gaze, posing questions for the reader of who gets to define whom, and answering none.
