After the Fire
Next week will be much more joy filled yet I felt it very important to share emotions and have the students talk about their experience this past few weeks.

The class did two exercises this week. They started with a pass around piece in which everyone had a few minutes on a piece and then we passed it to the next person and so on for 1 1/2 hours. The results were amazing and reflective of the feelings about the recent Napa Fire. These pass around pieces have no names because it was everyone on each page.

The second exercise was to paint a landscape and express your emotions about our valley.

Spring Bouquets: Putting it All Together

“Saturday in class we painted standing up with hands at the top of our long brushes, intent on painting loose.  Jessel uses words like “whisper” and “suggest” in creating, instead of painting a photo-perfect painting.  She says it’s more painterly to “suggest” a flower, letting the eye of the gazer have some input and interpretation.  That suits me just fine because then there’s more room for blending and merging, my favorite techniques.  And in my life, I seem to be in that stage of “suggesting” rather than the in your face black and white confronting of earlier stages." Flat Washes in Watercolor
As the name "flat wash" implies, your aim is to end up with a "flat" or "even" wash of color throughout the entire area that you're painting. A successful flat wash results in a seamless field of color without break, variation, or flaw. The Class was amazingly successful in developing great composition as well as following the technique of flat washes

Our Students Say:

“Class is never dull and never the same.  Somehow Jessel always presents a new way of looking at artistic creation.  She's organized, prepared, and then waltzes in and makes all her work--and talent-- seem easy.  And she will not let you fail.  More than once, she has pulled the rabbit out of the hat when I've been struggling with something I was sure was worthless.  Add to this a core of regulars sprinkled with an array of newcomers, all with varying degrees of experience, and the results are entertaining and varied. "
"I love to see the "unveilings" at the end of class, when it becomes obvious once again that everyone has unique style and interpretation.  The ways to interpret a flower, a vineyard, an abstract are endless.”
"An inspiring artist and good teacher who can find the gem in any piece and teach how to enhance it."
