A WORD FROM JESSEL MILLER:
My students continue to amaze me with their ability to jump into new concepts on a weekly basis and create beauty and brilliance.
I recently received this amazing quote from my dear friend Joy and it truly reflects my teaching style and direction:

Creating anything is a journey. Some parts are easy, some parts are uphill, and some parts get rocky. But unlike a real life journey, there is no map. Literally no-one has been where you are trying to go. You are heading into the unknown, like one of those old-timey explorers, and you will draw the map as you go. That's why I think my love of the unknown has turned out to be a blessing—and why I believe it's something every artist needs to embrace. Because the truth is, if you want to create something truly new, you have to step into the dark without a map. There’s no blueprint, no set of instructions, no guarantee of success. And yet, this is exactly where the magic happens—not in certainty, but in exploration.

The artists who thrive aren’t the ones who wait for clarity before they begin. They’re the ones who start anyway, trusting that the answers will come through the work itself.  So instead of fearing the unknown, make it your ally. Let it excite you instead of paralyze you. Instead of asking, “What if I fail?” try asking, “What might I discover?” Because the unknown isn’t something to avoid--it’s the very thing that makes art possible.

Meet Your Teachers

JESSEL MILLER
Picture
ABOUT JESSEL
My journey as an art teacher began with a single student—Gayle Wilson, wife of former Governor Pete Wilson. In the 1990s, she approached me for private watercolor lessons, and that extraordinary opportunity launched years of teaching that would shape both my craft and philosophy.

Over time, I developed a spontaneous, intuitive approach I call “flying by the seat of your pants,” and eventually coined the term Jesselism to describe my creative process. For five decades, watercolor was my primary medium—a dance of control and color that taught me patience and subtlety.

Then, in the summer of 2019, something shifted. My rooftop class students asked to paint on rocks and wine glasses, and we began playing with acrylics. That exploration opened a door I didn’t even know I’d been knocking on. Acrylics brought playfulness and vibrancy to my palette—if watercolor was ballet, acrylic became my modern dance: free, expressive, and wildly liberating.

Now, when I teach, freedom is the word that guides me. My goal is to tap into the psyche of every student, helping them unearth and cultivate their own distinct style. Art is more than technique—it’s a path to self-discovery, and I’m honored to walk that path beside them.

ABOUT SUNSHINE
Since completing Montessori Assistant Teacher training in 2002 at the Montessori School of San Leandro and earning an A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education in 2003, I have been devoted to nurturing creativity and learning in children and young adults. In 2005, I created a comprehensive art program for Pre-K through 8th grade students at First Christian School in Napa. I deepened my understanding of art as a therapeutic tool with an Art for Healing Certification from Chapman University in 2009.

Since 2015, I’ve served as a Montessori art teacher while also working privately with young adults to explore artistic expression. In 2019, I began facilitating mixed media art workshops, which evolved into regular monthly classes at Color Theory Art Supplies in 2023, followed by weekly sessions with the Napa Art Association in 2024.

Currently, I teach weekly mixed media classes at Jessel Gallery, continuing my mission to inspire and empower through the arts.

ABOUT DIANE
I began my watercolor journey in 2002. At the time I was teaching group fitness classes which was my passion for about 30 years.  Not long after I started painting it became apparent that I   found my new passion. I retired from teaching fitness in 2011 and focused on my art but realized I missed teaching.

My first teaching job as an artist was at a local elementary school. One of my fitness students had been teaching art for years and was looking for another teacher to help out. I taught a couple days a week for a few years. It was very rewarding and I learned a great deal  but I found that I was craving more time in my studio so I stopped that teaching job and focused on developing my painting skills.

Sometime in the early 2010’s when I began to show my art at the Jessel Gallery, I found Jessel to be a great mentor, full of encouragement and our friendship grew. One day I mentioned to Jessel that my dream was to teach watercolor classes and just like that, in true Jessel fashion she said, “Okay, let’s pick a date and send out the email blast!”. A few weeks later, I taught my first class at the gallery. That was about 8 years ago and I have been teaching ever since. I teach 6 classes a month regularly as well as occasional private lessons.

I love to share what I have learned over the years. It is very rewarding when my students feel successful and happy with their progress. Watercolor is a unique medium. It is so versatile. It can be relaxing, exciting, sometimes frustrating, and so rewarding.  Come paint with me and discover the joy of watercolor.

2024 Student Work

Faces (7/7 & 7/11)
This class was not easy and yet the challenge seemed to inspire the class.
Creative Color (6/30 & 7/4)
Everyone was given the same black and white image (
first) to paint however they were inspired. No one was allowed to look at anyone else's piece until the end of class. Fascinating and unique results!
Farmer's Market (6/24 & 6/27)
Interiors in a Loose Style & The View from Your Window (6/16 & 6/20)
Sky Reflections on Water (6/9 & 6/13)
Switching Hands for Sky Paintings (6/3 & 6/6)
For this class, students painted the same image using both hands. On the left are the non-dominant hand paintings and on the right are the dominant hand paintings.
Flying by the Seat of Your Pants (5/26 & 5/30)
This was all about what I called "flying by the seat of your pants." Flying by the seat of my pants means to act without a plan or to rely on instinct and improvisation rather than a structured approach. The students were given a piece of paper with abstracted paint on it and they had to find forms faces figures and creatures in the abstraction.
Trees (5/19 & 5/23)
Animals in Their Environments (5/12 & 5/16)
Color Blending and Matching (5/5 & 5/9)
Working from Photos (4/28 & 5/2)

This month we are focusing on human and natural concepts coming together

Iconic Locations (2/24 & 2/28)

Students Say

A small boat on a swoosh sea.  I considered painting an ocean and liner but went small instead. 😉
I sure am enjoying the classes, Jessel.  I've  never had a class or for that matter an instructor that permitted such freedom to experiment and then offer to help me paint my way out of the corner.
Thank you oodles!
Deb K

I think I rsvp -ed for this Wednesday. Looking forward to another day in painting paradise.

In response to Tim Carl's "Jessel Gallery: Napa's artist hub" I send my full endorsement and appreciation to Jessel Miller. I took my first art class there this past Wednesday.
I thought I would feel out of place being a slightly young man surrounded by women painters, many of them far more talented and learned than myself. But I was welcomed very warmly and had a wonderful experience. Mrs. Miller is an excellent teacher. After all these years, she still exerts such passion and creativity. She is also very patient and kind for first timers like myself who haven't painted in a long time. The potluck is worth going for by itself and I highly recommend people to take a class, or just pop in and see the incredible collection of local artwork showcased there. It truly is a gem in our local community.
Cheers to you Jessel.

I wanted to thank you so much for making time to teach me some painting yesterday. I learned so much from you. Your positivity and encouragement was much appreciated. I am inspired to paint. I thought it was serendipitous that I could call and schedule an art lesson on the same day. Then I met you and watched you interact with me, the public and on the phone and realized you were a rare gem of happiness and energy. After reading your 3 books you generously gave me I realized that your message of soft love and strong values was the authentic Jessel. How lucky for me that I was able to meet you. It wasn’t serendipity. It was meant to be. Thank you!!…Suzy

I would like to comment on the art classes I have begun with Jessel in Napa. As a disabled person, having lost the use of my left hand, and with zero art experience, I was amazed at what I was able to create in a single lesson. Jessel is a patient, talented artist who shares her techniques with people like me who know nothing. By the end of one class, I had an interesting, colorful piece of art that was actually good enough to frame or display. And the second class was a different technique with a completely different result. Very happy to be learning a creative activity to pursue. She is the best teacher!! ❤️❤️ Kathy Ryan

Wanted to tell you a big thank you for yesterday afternoon. I loved learning more of the “Jessel Method” and it was my first time inside a place in months. I love the Jessel Method and plan to play with it often. I use Saral transfer paper for my mandala templates. I am going to try it for tracing images as it comes in several colors either as sheets or a roll if you want to see if it can work as well for you as the carbon paper. Thank you for a lovely experience and I am delighted to expand upon what I learned from you yesterday; as it was also my first time adding an image in that way to an abstract painting. Have a wonderful day!

"Thank you, thank you... it was a great class, Jessel. It's been almost two years since I started the class. The whole experience has been so good for me. You may not remember how and why I got started in my "art class journey" . I came in to the studio to give you those dress shoes I didn't wear to a fundraiser - and thought I'd never wear heels of any kind again - after my bike accident. I picked up one of your brochures and told you that the Kaiser Rehab suggested that doing new things in a new environment with new people would be a good step in recovery for me. I was all in of course and felt that a big plus was that Jessel Gallery was not a completely new thing for me. And the "rest is history" as they say." - Sally K.
