Kathleen Scavone

Kathleen Scavone, retired educator, is a northern California potter, freelance writer and  photographer. She enjoys family ties, volunteering on archaeology digs, travel and hiking. She writes columns for the Napa Valley Register, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, News From Native California and the Lake County Bloom, etc.  Her writing often focuses on Northern California history and the natural world. She has written three books, along with a poetry chapbook. Her three books:
Anderson Marsh State Historic Park- A Walking History, Prehistory, Flora and Fauna Tour of a California State Park
People of the Water- a juvenile novella of the events leading to the Bloody Island Massacre of 1850
Native Americans of Lake County, California

Inspiration for her pottery surrounds her in the oak woodlands, forests, streams and coastline of Northern California. She loves to think of her vessels-  both decorative and functional, at home in the world, and believes that there is an intimate connection between the user and the pottery she creates.

Her pottery often incorporates elements of the natural world into her wheel-thrown stoneware pottery. Manzanita pottery incorporates native California wood, manzanita. The name means "little apple". Her moon pots mimic the over 180 moons of our solar system. Moons have odd shapes, canyons, water oceans and craters. Her repurposed glass pottery incorporates glass from many local wine bottles. A tough job, but somebody had to do it!
