Luann Udell

Luann Udell, artist/writer, retells ancient stories from a lost culture, an imagined prehistory. Her animal artifacts and relics resemble antler, stone, shell, and bone. She uses modern materials, and no animals are harmed in her process.

Her dream was to be an artist, but she lost her way early in life, believing she wasn’t ‘good enough’. Instead, she majored in art history and English lit, and received an MA in education.

But years later, wanting to mirror courage for her own children, she realized making art was as essential as breathing air for her.

She began with the Lascaux Cave in France, considered the birthplace of human art, created during the end of the last Ice Age 17,000 years ago. She started with the horses of Lascaux…and never left.

The cave was full of wonders and mystery, generating many theories now known to be incorrect: Hunting magic, target practice, etc.

Now we know the first known human artifact was not an axe or a spear, but a bead, almost 100,000 years old. Animal images in prehistoric cave art are not the animals hunted by that tribe.

Many of the cave painters/shamans were women, and ALL members of their tribe took part in these rituals.

All humans have creative energy inside us.
Pursuing our creative work lifts our hearts.
Sharing it with others lifts their hearts, too, and makes the world a better place for all of us.
