Sharon Crary

I’m Ohio born, had a short sojourn in L.A. then moved to another La., Louisiana, and back to California, only north this time to Napa.

The weaving began after a purchase of an antique spinning wheel and wondering what to do with hand spun yarns. I wove many rugs, both wool and “rag “, worked with interior designers and exhibited in galleries and arts and crafts fairs. A highlight of that time was weaving wall pieces for the chamber of commerce offices in Baton Rouge.

After retirement I settled into a weaving studio (converted garage) in Napa. The tapestry bug bit about fifteen years ago and since then I have been juried into several of the American Tapestry Alliance Small Tapestry International Exhibits and was honored to have my piece, “Colorin’ Books,” chosen for the catalog cover for Outside the Line. I have also been juried into the Handweavers Guild of America Small Expression Exhibit with one of my tapestries on the cover of their 2015/2016 winter edition of Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot magazine. The American Tapestry Alliance accepted Seems to Be… as one of 36 pieces for International Tapestry Biennial 11 and in 2018 Feathers in Flight was juried into the Biennial 12. I was an invited exhibitor in the 1st International Tapestry Exhibition in 2019 at the Canadian Tapestry and Texture Centre in Oakville, Ontario.

​I am primarily a self-taught weaver and readily admit to benefitting from many workshops, classes, and excellent books that focus on color, design, and weaving techniques. My creative inspiration comes from the weaving materials and process itself. I choose to create with fiber because of the resulting textural color fields and the effect that occurs from blending or contrasting yarns that range from threads to bulky, reflective to dull, smooth to lumpy, in any and all colors. Eccentric weaving and wedge weave are my “go to” tapestry techniques as they allow me to make the yarns follow the direction of the shapes, curving and rippling to create a dynamic tension in a three dimensional tapestry. Peter Collingwood’s shaft-switching is my favorite rug weaving choice because it allows me to be almost as free with creative shapes and color blending as tapestry. The most fun I have is when I can create at the loom while weaving and answer the “what if” question.
