LAY IT ON MY HEART
“At the beginning of "Lay It on My Heart," Bay Area writer Angela Pneuman's marvelous dark and comic debut novel, 12-year-old Charmaine is trying to follow her preacher father's example of "praying without ceasing," a task he set for himself on a recent pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In their small Kentucky town, he is known as a prophet who has been hearing God's voice in his ear for decades. Charmaine reveres him, believing him to be a true visionary and aspiring to be like him. But after he wanders into a patch of poison ivy, douses his rash in bleach and then walks - naked and oozing - to a neighbor's house, a trip to the ER leads to a psychiatric consultation that comes as a shock to Charmaine (if not the reader). It turns out that the voice he's been hearing is not God's but a symptom of manic depression. While he's institutionalized, Charmaine and her mother - who have spent the past year living "on faith alone," following another dictate that allegedly came straight from God - are forced to rent their house and move into a tiny trailer by the river.”
