How the Earth Holds Us
poems by Mary Holman Tuteur
with foreword by Bruce Gibbs and afterword by Louise Kleinsorge Williams
"Readers of How the Earth Holds Us will come to know Maggie Tuteur as few have known her during a daring life of adventure, yearning, tragedy, and wonder. We may sometimes be shocked by Tuteur’s raw pain and her passion, but we are guided by her craft and her search for peace; as she writes, 'I am living in the echo / of a clear bell’s ring.' Those venturing into this rich collection of poems will hear Maggie Tuteur’s voice long after they close the book."
—Barbara Baer, author of The Ice Palace Waltz and The Last Devadasi
"Open gently: This book holds a poet’s life. To tell the story of one’s existence in poetry is an accomplishment, the proof of having lived one’s life with open eyes and heart and a vulnerable soul. Tuteur’s gift translates the wordless into reverberating images. With the wildness in her intact, she delivers narratives lit by the lyrical and taut with earned wisdom."
—Gwynn O’Gara, author of We Who Dream and Snake Woman Poems
The poems in How the Earth Holds Us span more than five decades in the career of Mary Holman Tuteur, a remarkable poet known to many as Maggie. As a protégée of Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney in the 1960s, Tuteur demonstrated a keen eye for imagery, a sensitivity to rhythm, and an open-hearted honesty, qualities that she would hone as her life and her work grew deeper and more complex. Themes of intimacy and exile, grief and ecstasy, mortality, kinship, and the resilience of the creative impulse thread through the book’s seven sections, accompanied by the poet’s own dream-wrought and imaginative drawings. A foreword by Bruce Gibbs and an afterword and photographs by Louise Kleinsorge Williams offer context both for those familiar with Tuteur’s poems and those discovering her work for the first time.
