Artist's Interpretation
From Photograph to Painting
A Virtual Experience - Summer 2020

The concept for this show came to me when I started transitioning from abstraction to realism over the past few weeks. I was going through what I call my scrap, or photos I had taken of the valley, and realized that all the artists participating in this show have, from time to time, worked from photographs. With this in mind, I asked artists to submit a photo they would be willing to share and the painting they did from the photo. It fascinates me to see what each artist gleans from a photo and how they translate the concept. How they construe the image is reflected in unique and fascinating ways.
Enjoy, and thank you for supporting our amazing artists!

MARTA COLLINGS
Landscapes of Northern California and Beyond
Preferring a wet on wet loose impressionist style, painting with watercolors or oils, I work quickly with large brushes or palette knives trying not to obsess with detail. I try to convey the feeling of the warm sunlight or the wind blowing through your hair or the smell of the flowers and plants.  My paintings are a moment in time, I want to give the viewer the love of the landscape that I have embraced.

ERIN DERTNER
Painting, studying and teaching the subject of light is Erin’s driving force. The cool shadows of the early morning and those that fall long and warm in the evening enliven her creative soul as nothing else. Subject matter is secondary to the sunlight itself, though her locations speak volumes about God’s wondrous world of color, drama and mystery.

Visiting the Beltane Ranch property in the Sonoma Valley was a cheek pinching experience to be sure. The wild hills coupled with the green of the vineyards were the ideal foil for the boisterous English garden with every color represented and the lilting hollyhocks proudly swaying.

While roaming the Napa byroads, this iconic barn dressed in the light of the golden hour called out loudly to me. The coral and pink in the hills beyond only served to pull my art trigger and the cool greens and shadows of the vineyard played the perfect supporting role. There’s no place like the Napa Valley for serenity and even more so in this particular time. Sigh.

MICHAEL FITZPATRICK
In my paintings I work to express beauty through the orchestration of two-dimensional elements – shape, value and temperature. I infuse randomness whenever possible and at every scale. Random is beauty: There are no ugly clouds.

JESSEL MILLER
For the first time in 35 years, Jessel Gallery owner, Jessel Miller, has had time to paint every day, all day. The work flies off the end of her brush literally shooting through her.  There is a vibration and excitement of color and concept in the new paintings that Jessel feels is some of her best work.  From simple landscapes to drifting abstract forms, "Jesselism" is immersed in emotional subject matter wrapped in splashes of brilliant color and conversation.

DANIEL MUNDY
Daniel Mundy's work has taken on a spiritual quality that seems to transcend the sense of capturing a particular location. Daniel starts with a few reference photos and begins his work by producing several drawings in charcoal on paper which are largely invented depictions. Then when one of these ideas shows some of the emotion he’s looking for in the work he begins the painting using these sketches as his major inspiration. The photo references become merely a source for additional anatomical detail.

ALAN SANBORN
I'm a straightforward, no special effects, watercolorist. My style? Like everyone, I try and I've tried to paint like those I most admire, sometimes my own students. Boy do I see a lot I like in other people's paintings. But I hold a brush differently, I see color differently. My style is, probably, how much myself gets in the way of lessons I can't quite learn.

OLAF SCHNEIDER
For Olaf each piece represents an intense exploration and refinement of his personal pictorial sensitivities, especially as they relate to beauty, form, light, and shade. Composition, colour, and craftsmanship are all elements that become the building blocks of his work. Olaf is a prolific painter who is inspired by the power and diversity of the northern landscape, and anything that needs a "second look". An explorer by nature, he travels across North America and Europe to gain inspiration.
“Each dab I make is stimulated by the details that I observe. I hope to see what others miss and then make it compelling. I push and alter the colours to suit my ravenous needs and I love to improvise on the spot.”

KATHY TRANMER
I have a great time painting.  I hope this joy in creating something out of an idea and paint is obvious in the finished product.
I really love unwrapping a new blank canvas.  I even like the smell. It is my opportunity to create something totally unique.  I work in acrylics because there is very little drying time so I can paint all day when I get motivated. I work with organic pigments because the colors are vibrant and true. I have a deep appreciation for the outdoors. We live in the hills above Napa, California.  The constantly changing colors and the beauty of the wine country are my inspiration.
