June Watercolor Classes with Diane Pope

Palette Knife Painting with Watercolor
Tuesday, June 9 | 9:30am - 12:30pm

This is a fun, loose way to paint that creates wonderful textures and shapes. I’ll show you how to use a palette knife to create trees, branches and even leaves. We will also use a brush for some of the painting. Please bring your own watercolor paints and brushes and palette knife.  I will bring extra palette knives with me so you don’t need to go out and buy one for this class.

Brush Stroke Painting
Saturday, June 13 | 9:30am - 12:30pm

This class is fun and relaxing. Learn how to paint flowers, bamboo, butterflies, dragonflies and more using  simple brushstrokes. No drawing involved. It’s a great class for beginners and beyond.

Negative Space
Tuesday, June 23 | 9:30am - 12:30pm

What is negative space and how do we use it in our drawings and paintings? We will practice seeing and painting the spaces between our objects to create shape and form.

Past Classes: Take a look at what we've created this year!  And in 2019, 2018 and 2017!

Dinah Cross James Visit - 3/15

This was one of the most inspirational classes because we went to Dinah Cross James' Studio and got to meet and experience her amazingly beautiful art life journey. Her generosity of spirit and devotion to her craft left everyone speechless and she gifted everyone her fantastic life story in her book. We came back to the gallery and set into the focal point concept and then painting in acrylic from palette paper images I save after I am done with the paint on them so everyone had a starting point. The work is brilliant and exciting and colorful like Dinah's work and I loved every minute of the day. THANK YOU DINAH!

Focal Point - 3/11

We talked about what we look for in the focal point of a painting and then I gave everyone a starter piece and they found birds and looked for the focal point of the image. Lots of color and contrast, and diverging lines and movement in each piece!

Composition - 3/8

This class we walked around the gallery looking at how artists decide to create a painting and how balanced the piece felt. Then the students created their own compositions and worked out what felt balanced to them.

Color, Color, Color - 3/4

We did a class on Color using palette knife and brush. The results were lovely landscapes and bright images.

Homage to Dinah Cross James - 2/26 & 3/1

On Wednesday and Sunday we did color paintings inspired by the wonderful work of Dinah Cross James. She is a prolific power house and the brilliant colors and simple designs excited and amazed the students. The second piece they did was a color study with a carryover from the first piece.

Our Students Say:

“Class is never dull and never the same.  Somehow Jessel always presents a new way of looking at artistic creation.  She's organized, prepared, and then waltzes in and makes all her work--and talent-- seem easy.  And she will not let you fail.  More than once, she has pulled the rabbit out of the hat when I've been struggling with something I was sure was worthless.  Add to this a core of regulars sprinkled with an array of newcomers, all with varying degrees of experience, and the results are entertaining and varied. "

"Dear Jessel,
Want to thank you for your inspiring owl painting and description. I so appreciate witnessing your process as you embark on this new avenue of acrylic painting. It is wonderful to be around your creative process and your passion. I love being in your presence and that of all the works you are creating.
I am so enjoying learning about watercolors with you.
Warmly,
Lori"

"I love to see the "unveilings" at the end of class, when it becomes obvious once again that everyone has unique style and interpretation.  The ways to interpret a flower, a vineyard, an abstract are endless.”
"An inspiring artist and good teacher who can find the gem in any piece and teach how to enhance it."
