Lessons for the Teacher

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
― William Arthur Ward

It is amazing that I spent most of my artistic career creating for the world and sharing my visions with my clients and now one of my greatest joys is giving back through teaching Art Classes in the Gallery and out in the world.  What a joy it is to sit in the room surrounded by students who seem to be floating in what I call the Zen Zone. The Students inspire me in so many ways. First of all they are like sponges and every lesson each one of them comes up with images that amaze me.
I have my own style yet so do they and the differences are astounding:
This month we have devoted our class to Spring in both color and concept. Learning to do eggs seems like a simple lesson yet it proved to be much harder than one would expect. The class took on the challenge and came through with flying …and I mean Flying Colors.
The first week we painted rabbits in lots of positions and poses. What amazes me each week is the fact that even my first time painters are consistent in their color palette and page design.
My students have taught me some invaluable lessons. I have become a better painter because of their innocent approached to each lessons. Here are the lessons I share and have experienced as a teacher:
Picture
1. We all see through the filter of our life experiences and our likes and dislikes.
2. I ask that there be  NO JUDGEMENT through the process. I find that when I do the what I call the Big Reveal” at the end of the class students really like their pieces.
3. There is no right or wrong way to paint an image, Just your way.
4. Watercolors teach the painter the process of going from light to dark and allowing the layers to waft through which is exactly the opposite way Oil or Acrylic painters work. It is the perfect medium to learn color and the blending techniques can be translated to any medium once learned.

Until next time...Jessel
